Understanding the Basic Terms of Fiber Optic Cabling Installation
The world of fiber optic cabling is simply fascinating. For the uninitiated, this is the heart of our new age communication system, wherein signals are sent through thin, hair-like strands of fiber, made from glass or plastic.
To begin with, if you are new to this technology or want to know certain terminology, then it is best to start understanding the basic terms used for fiber optic cabling installations.
- Cable and Cable Assembly
The first term is the cable. A cable, in fiber optic language, (or in any other) is an optical fiber, which is protected by a covering, made up of plastic. The cable also comprises of other aspects such as strength members. An assembly, on the other hand, is one that is terminated through connectors and are ready for installation.
- Installers
Installers are those firms or individuals who can install the fiber optic cabling, on-premises or outside. Usually, the extent of work carried out depends upon the size of the installation company.
- OSP or the Outside Plant and Inside or Premises Cabling
According to the fiber optic language, an outside plant is one which includes the cables, ducts, towers, poles, conduits and other repeater units or equipment which forms the connection. These outside plant installations are made up of single mode fibers and go long distances to form the connection. A premises cabling is one where the cabling is installed within short lengths – within premises such as an office or business centers and factories. These cabling systems travel an only short distance.
- Ethernet and External Modulations
Ethernets are the standards of local area network. An original Ethernet usually transmits 10 Mbits per second, while a fast Ethernet will go up to 100 Mbits per second. External modulation is the modulation of any light source (an output device) by another external device.
There are several other technical terms that one need to understand before calling in an installation service. On the other hand, if you are looking for fiber optic cabling installation for your business, the installers would be able to give a comprehensive idea about both the terms and technicalities involved.
